Artist Statement
Shasta Lily Barkman is a designer, seamstress, and educator working in the beautiful Lək̓ʷəŋən territory also known as Victoria, BC. They graduated from the Blanche MacDonald Centre in Vancouver with a diploma in Fashion Design.
Shasta’s design philosophy is rooted in repair and reuse, finding beauty and new life in discarded things. They incorporate found textiles, lino print, embroidery, and various mending techniques in their designs. Each piece is hand-crafted in Shasta’s Fernwood studio from natural fibres and second-hand textiles.
In addition to making clothing, Shasta teaches sewing lessons, and hosts mending workshops around Victoria.
